Be sure to match your metals for a complementary combo. “Don’t be afraid to wear large pieces on one wrist — or even on both wrists,” said Shifteh. “If you have one or two bangles on one wrist, wear a watch on the other to balance it out.”

“Animal prints can be mixed and matched much more manageably when it’s done with jewelry because it’s such a small amount of print,” explained Shifteh. The key is to choose animal prints that play off your outfit’s color palette. What Causes a Loss of Enamel?

Enamel is the thin, translucent, hard outer layer of the teeth that protects them from the daily stress of chewing, biting and grinding; temperatures of hot and cold foods and drinks; and erosive acids. Despite being the toughest tissue in your body, a variety of factors can cause enamel erosion, or loss of enamel. Loss of enamel increases teeth sensitivity, exposes stains on teeth, increases vulnerability to cavities and decay, and creates rough and irregular teeth edges and dents on teeth surfaces.

Erosive Acids

Enamel loss is primarily caused by erosive acids that wear away enamel over time. Excessive consumption of soft drinks, which contain high amounts of phosphoric and citric acids, and other acidic drinks and foods, such as fruit drinks and sour foods or candies, is the leading cause of acid-related enamel loss. Frequent consumption of medicines and supplements containing high acid content, including aspirin, antihistamines and vitamin C supplements, also cause enamel loss. Stomach acids brought up to the mouth from acid reflux disease, or heartburn, and other gastrointestinal problems can also erode enamel. This includes stomach acids brought up from frequent vomiting due to bulimia, alcoholism or binge drinking.

Environmental Factors

Environmental factors in the mouth, or the physical wear and tear from daily friction and stress on the teeth, are another contributing factor of enamel loss. Environmental causes of enamel loss include friction from clenching or grinding your teeth, especially during sleep, and wear and tear from brushing your teeth too hard, improper flossing, biting hard objects or chewing tobacco. Stress fractures, or chips and cracks in the enamel, cause permanent enamel damage because enamel does not contain any living cells to help the body repair these fractures.

Low Saliva Production

Acid- and environmental-related enamel loss are even more likely if you have a dry mouth or low saliva production. Saliva strengthens both your teeth and their enamel by coating them with calcium and other strengthening minerals. Saliva also protects against enamel erosion by diluting and washing away erosive acids and other wastes leftover from foods and drinks and by producing substances that fight against mouth bacteria and disease that can cause enamel loss. While a healthy amount of saliva production can protect enamel from the erosive effects of acidic foods and drinks, excessive consumption of acidic foods and drinks decreases saliva production and saliva’s ability to strengthen teeth and enamel.

Plaque Build-Up

An excessive build-up of plaque can also contribute to enamel loss. Plaque is a thin, sticky coating made of saliva, food particles and bacteria that forms between teeth, inside holes or pits in your molars, and at the gum line. Some of the bacteria found in plaque can change food starches into acids that wear down enamel over time by eating away at its healthy minerals. As long as plaque continues to build up in your teeth, the acids in plaque will continuously erode enamel.

How to Get Rid of Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a common form of gum disease that causes swelling or inflammation of your gums. Gingivitis can cause your gums to become swollen and begin to bleed just by brushing the teeth, eating or just touching the gums. The condition is the preclude to periodontal disease, which is a disease of the tissues that surround the neck and root of the teeth. There is a way to get rid of gingivitis, but it has to done every day or it won’t help for long.

Instructions

  1. Use dental floss to clean between your teeth. You need to floss first so you loosen anything caught between your teeth. Use either dental floss, floss picks or floss wands. They are available in waxed, non-wax, flavored or unflavored.
  2. Brush your teeth. Brushing after you floss will help to get rid of anything loosened between your teeth. Rmember to brush along the gum line, up, down and across your teeth because plaque can get set up at the gum line, not just between the teeth.
  3. Scrape your tongue with a tongue scrapper or the back of your toothbrush. Scrape back to front several times. This will help to remove any bacteria on your tongue, which can contribute to bad breath and plaque buildup.
  4. Make a paste with baking soda and peroxide. Apply this paste to your gums, gently massaging it in. Leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse with water.
  5. Rinse with mouthwash. There are many brands and flavors of mouthwash. Find one that can help prevent gingivitis, and that helps reduce plaque buildup and kills oral bacteria. This, in turn, helps defeat and prevent bad breath.
  6. Visit your dentist. If your gums are puffy, red, swollen or bleeding, you need to see your dentist. Getting a professional tooth cleaning will help remove the plaque and tartar that cause gingivitis and can prevent the gingivitis from progressing to periodontal disease.

Tips & Warnings

  1. The main reason a person develops gingivitis is because of plaque buildup between the teeth. If ignored, this plaque becomes tartar and your dentist will need to help you get rid of it.
  2. Eating and drinking less sugary foods will help keep plaque and tartar away. Scraping the inside of your teeth when you scrape your tongue also helps to get rid of bacteria.
  3. Taking vitamin C can help stop the bleeding of the gums, but it will not cure your gingivitis.
  4. If you smoke, you need to stop. If you won’t stop smoking, then you need to make sure not to smoke when your gums are inflamed. Tobacco can cause cancer of the mouth and sores in your mouth and on your gums.
  5. One of the signs of early gingivitis is when your gums change color from pink to dark red.

The Dirt on Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

A set of artfully arranged brushes caked with remnants of makeup will kill the aesthetic of even the most beautiful display of makeup products. Without regular cleaning, makeup brushes can become a breeding ground for bacteria and, consequently, cause nasty breakouts. “We should all thoroughly clean our brushes once a week,” advised Janeena Billera, national makeup artist for glo minerals. With proper cleansing, a set of great makeup brushes can last for a lifetime of flawless, bacteria-free makeup application.

Wet Your Brushes

Gather your brushes and run them under lukewarm water with the brush head facing downward. “It is very important that the brush head is facing down so water does not get into the ferrule, the metal band that binds the bristles of a brush to the handle,” said Billera. Over time, water can loosen the glue that holds the brush together.

Apply Cleanser

Once brushes are thoroughly moistened, apply a small drop of mild shampoo to the bristles on each brush. Billera recommends baby shampoo because it’s gentle and doesn’t have a strong fragrance.

Lather

“Create a lather by swirling the brushes against the palm of your hand,” instructed Billera. Make sure you reach all the bristles, not just those on the outside. You can also use clean fingers to massage the soap into the entire brush.

Rinse

With your brush heads facing downward again, rinse the bristles thoroughly under lukewarm water. Continue rinsing until there are no traces of soap or residue left — just as you’d wash your own hair.

Pat Dry

“After all your brushes are rinsed, use a clean towel to pat dry them,” said Billera. You can gently press the bristles between a towel to soak up excess moisture. It’s important to pat them dry as soon as they’re completely rinsed. Never let your brushes soak in water as this will make them fall apart.

Reshape Brushes and Dry

Once you’ve finished patting dry, reshape the brush heads and lay them down on a clean, dry towel for six to eight hours. “Do not put brushes right-side up in a cup or blow-dry them,” noted Billera. Laying them flat helps them maintain their original shape and keeps water out of the ferrules.

Daily Spray Cleansing

In addition to a weekly deep cleaning, you can perform a daily cleanse on each of your brushes with a water-free cleanser, available in cosmetic stores and online. “Just spray a couple of spritzes on a tissue and swirl the brush gently until there is no longer residue,” advised MLR makeup artist Kelly Morezak. “A lot of brush cleansers are anti-bacterial, which is great if you have acne-prone skin. Talk about the easiest way to prevent pimples!”

Conditioning Synthetic Brushes

“Synthetic brushes tend to get hard over time,” noted Morezak. “Every other cleaning, I use a hair conditioner on them.” She recommends selecting a conditioner with as little scent as possible. Follow the same steps you use when shampooing your brushes.

How to Store Clothes in Storage

With different seasons comes the need for different types of clothing. During the off season, clothing can be stored in a garage or storage facility. It is important to store these clothes properly. If not, bugs such as carpet beetles and silverfish can make a nest in the clothes. They can even leave your clothing with unrepairable holes. Mildew is another concern if clothing is not stored in the proper conditions.

Instructions

  1. Wash the clothes you wish to store. Do this even if you believe the clothes are already clean. The cleaner the clothes, the less likely you are to find insects.
  2. Dry your clothes in the dryer on high heat without any fabric softeners. Fabric softeners can attract insects. The high heat will kill any insects that were already on the clothing.
  3. Hang your dresses, blouses and dress pants on plastic hangers. Place them inside a thick canvas bag. Do not use thin garment bags as these are prone to mildew. Also, before zippering up the bag throw in a few tiny bags of silica gel. This will keep the area dry to prevent mildew.
  4. Fold and set your other clothing down flat in a plastic box. Between each piece of clothing put a sheet of acid-free tissue paper. This helps keep colors from fading. Add some silica gel packs to the box, and place a lid on it.
  5. Place your garment bags and plastic boxes in a storage area or facility that is well ventilated. Cold basements and hot attics are not ideal for clothing storage. A closet or underneath a bed will work if you are not planning on using a storage facility.
